Wellbeing Update

Kind words at CSPS

An area we are going to focus on with the students is the use of kind words. There seems to be an increase in students everywhere in our community of ‘trash talk’. It is interesting when you read about the origins of trash talk as it is used in sport to put competitors off their game. The psychology behind it is to ‘socially isolate’, ‘ostracise’ their opponent so they get distracted. There is also a degree of enjoyment people get from the banter. However, it is knowing when it is inappropriate and having a negative impact on the person the trash talk and banter is directed. It’s an area we would like to see improved amongst our students to continue to make Clifton Springs PS a safe and supportive environment for the children to be and learn.

On the bright side, we have many members of the community comment on how well behaved the students at Clifton Springs PS have been during the swimming program, camp, excursions and sporting events.

Naidoc Week 6th-13th July

Naidoc week always falls in the term 2 holidays. We do still make sure we have a focus on respecting the traditional owners of the land and elders past, present and future’.

Our Year 5/6 students have had a focus an indigenous theme in Inquiry and their latest reading material in class.

You may see the names we consulted the school community and Wadawurrung about for the new buildings in cast iron on each of the buildings.

The admin building is:-

Koling wada ngal meaning ‘let’s walk together’

The P-2 building and artroom is:-

Nyaal meaning ‘to open your eyes’

The year 5/6 building along with the science room is:-

Keela meaning ‘to speak’

Throughout the school we also have indigenous artwork and printed fabric on furniture in each of the rooms

In the yard we have several yarn circles and an indigenous garden out of respect for the original owners which students use to conference or just to sit.

The students with Koorie heritage always start our assembly with an acknowledgement to country that they developed.

We acknowledge the Wadawurrung people as traditional owners of this land and pay resect to Elders past and present.

Clifton Springs PS is located high on the hill overlooking our bay.

We enjoy our time living and learning on Wadawurrung country.

Acknowledgement to country on Watharoung Glass

We continue to build an awareness, appreciation and understanding of the indigenous people of Australia and locally.

Sporting Update

Well done to all the students who completed their swimming in the last couple of weeks. They braved the cold outside and the warm pool and most felt they had improved their swimming ability and strength and all seemed to enjoy the opportunity. Thanks to all the staff and front office staff that supported the swimming as well as the parents who visited to see their child swimming.
