Researchers have identified 6 BIG THINGS that impact on developing literacy skills.
1. Early language and literacy experiences
2. Phonological awareness
3. Letter - sound knowledge
4. Vocabulary
5. Fluency
6. Comprehension




This chat is about - Literacy experiences and early language

While this generally means talking to children from the earliest possible time, this actually continues to be very important right through life.
Think of something you have learned to do more recently, eg learning to drive. Imagine learning that new skill without any "chat." No questions answered. No discussion. Talking about what we see, think, feel and learn is essential to our understanding.
Children's language is shaped by adult models and responses.
A great literacy experience is READING ALOUD TO CHILDREN. Don't stop just because they can read a bit for themselves! Have fun with a story. By listening to stories, children learn about how language works. They hear sounds and rhythms and intonation. It really helps to build a love of reading if you enjoy the experience together.
