Welcome
Hi and welcome to the 5/6 team blog for Week 1, Term 3. We cannot believe we are half way through our school year already, time flies when you are having fun!
Maths
We have kicked off Term 3 Numeracy with a focus on Money Maths, the students have been studying Australian Currency and Financial Planning. Using real life scenarios and skills, students have been budgeting and using running totals to manage and understand money. The task of purchasing products with a given amount of money came as a shock to most students, who knew that there wasn’t a never-ending supply!
Reading
In our Readers Workshop sessions we have been making personal connections with what we are reading or viewing, to other texts, the world and ourselves. The skill of making connections based on schema has broadened student knowledge by expanding their thinking and adding to their prior knowledge.
Writing
The students have begun exploring different styles of poetry and studying the various elements to each. They have been focusing on one particular writing trait each lesson and discovering how various authors exhibit that trait.
Inquiry
We have started Term 3 with a new topic of Inquiry, we are studying Immigration. Our ‘Big Idea’ is ‘People relocate for many reasons, which brings change and leads to different perspectives.’ Studying this topic allows students to develop empathy and understanding for the positive and negative reasons as to why people migrate to other countries. Particularly, Australia, as a multicultural country it is important to understand other perspectives and beliefs.
