5/6 Team Blog

Welcome
Hi and welcome to the 5/6 team blog for week 9, Term 2. It has been a big couple of weeks as usual and we hope you enjoy the details of what of our students have been up to.
Maths

The past 3 weeks have seen the year 5/6 classes studying fractions. The students have done a fantastic job across the fractions unit. As a cohort we studied fraction walls, plotted fractions on a number line, looked at improper and proper fractions, mixed numbers, equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions and completed fraction equations using all four processes. All students finished the unit with a new level of understanding and all teachers were very pleased with how well everybody understood and grasped the concepts.
Reading
Summarising, synthesising and questioning have been applied in our Reader's Workshop sessions recently. We have been questioning to think within, about and beyond texts to deepen our understanding, whilst synthesising to add to our schema. Students have also been summarising to build on their comprehension skills.
Writing
Through our recent visit from our Literacy coach Julie Bennett, the 5/6's are leading a new writing approach that will enable the students to publish more often. We have analysed historical fiction texts in relation to the traits and are now beginning our drafting phase.
Inquiry
Buongiorno tutti! In Inquiry we have been studying Italiano, we are beginning to introduce ourselves and greet others. Students can successfully count to 12 and are working on a presentation that will be completed by the end of term and uploaded to the app SeeSaw.
Reminders
Important dates to remember:
