I had to write a blog following the Student Voice School Council sub-committee meeting I just had. Brent Richards, School Council President Steph Towse, Year 1/2 teacher Karen Marinelli and I were involved and we were just blown away by the leadership, ideas and enthusiasm the House Captains showed during that hour.
I had given the group some homework a couple of weeks ago. I told them that I wanted the CSPS House Program to expand in 2016, and for them to leave a legacy to be proud of. Well, some of the ideas they came with today were above and beyond what I even would have imagined. Some of the ideas were:
*HOUSE DAYS - early each year we will have 1 day set aside to celebrate each house. The morning learning block will be for all students to learn about the history and reasons why that particular house was named. The students from that particular house will be asked to wear house colours for the day. For the last hour of the day, students in that house will have fun activities, run by the House Captains and Mr Richards and Mr McCredden, to help celebrate a great day. These days will happen on the Mondays of weeks 3, 4, 5 & 6 next term in 2016, but from 2017 on will be done in term 1.
*HOUSE ANIMAL MASCOTS - the captains came to the meeting with the idea of having an emblem, logo or mascot linked to each house. They decided on animals being linked to each house, based on Australian animals beginning with the same letter as the house. I won't give away the big secret here....but stay tuned for the big announcements in coming weeks. The junior classes will get to vote on the icons that we use for each house.
*HOUSE ASSEMBLIES - once per month, students will sit in house groups at assembly. This will give the students a chance to be in mixed ages and feel part of a 'team' bigger than just their class.
*FLAGS AND BANNERS - the captains were keen to decorate the hall and school a bit more by adding flags and banners with our house colours and names on them. A design team will be put together and go to work on this ASAP.
*HOUSE CHANTS - the senior students in each house will create a chant to give students a chance to cheer as one at all sporting events. Stay tuned for an assembly performance with the new chants!
*HOUSE OLYMPICS - with 2016 being the year of the Olympics, the House Captains thought a term 3 'House Olympics' was the perfect way to celebrate. 7 different year levels will compete in 7 different events to decide the gold medal house of 2016! The House Captains will decide the 7 events.
*HOUSE LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES - there was an eagerness to run house competitions at lunchtime. We will look to set aside 1 day per week for house competitions. From Gaga Ball to Dodgeball, from basketball shooting to football goalkicking, look out for a bit of friendly house rivalry over the next few weeks!
This was not the end of the brilliant ideas from the House Captains, but we purely ran out of time and when the 3:30 bell went they still wanted to stay and meet for longer! It's amazing what comes out when you give leadership opportunities to students and the freedom to explore ideas. We are very proud of our student leaders at CSPS and look forward to an expanding house system in 2016 and beyond!
Until next time, please leave some comments, and have a great day!
